The Do’s and Don’ts of Car Buying

When you’re purchasing a new vehicle, it’s easy to get caught up in that new car smell and fun new technology. Let’s face it, the new shiny cars are fun to look at and drive. However, when you have a plan in place, that will help you make the right decision that fits your lifestyle. That’s why our finance team has compiled a list of do’s and don’ts to help you through this process.

1. Do Know Your Needs

To begin, you’ll need to know what your needs are when it comes to the type of vehicle you want. Do you need more cargo space or more room for passengers? How about technological features? Deciding on the body style is important as well because then you can focus on a group of vehicles.

2. Do Research

You’ll have to do some research as to what makes and models are out there and available. It’s always good to know this beforehand so you can plan your visit to the dealership accordingly.

3. Do Know How Much You Can Afford

Creating a budget can be one of the most difficult steps of the process. You may have found the vehicle that fits your lifestyle perfectly, but finding one that you can afford can sometimes be a bit more difficult. When buying a new vehicle, it’s recommended to put about 20 percent down, limit the term to no more than 60 months and keep your monthly payment below 10 percent of your income. Plus, you’ll want to make sure you factor in the regular cost of insurance options such as GAP insurance, as well as maintenance costs. Some cars cost more than others in the long run.

4. Don’t Trade In A Car That’s Worth Less Than You Owe On It

Negative equity can be a burden. The balance of your old loan may be consolidated into the new car’s loan amount, meaning you could be paying the debt of two cars at the same time. Get ahead by researching what your trade may be worth.

5. Don’t Rush Your Test-Drive

Take your time with the test-drive to make sure you actually enjoy driving the car instead of just enjoying the new car smell. Ask questions, play with the various features and look around the vehicle. Make sure the car has enough space for everything you need.
