The motor oil in your vehicle is what protects the moving parts in your engine. Thus, you need to have the exact amount your owner’s manual recommends. Commutes to and from Gainesville, or love long drives from Dawsonville need a well oiled engine. At Lou Sobh Honda, we can help you learn how to check car oil, or you can check yourself with our helpful tips. Please contact our service department if you need help!

How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Depending on your vehicle’s year, make, and model, learning how to check your car oil may differ. You may have an electronic oil monitor or traditional dipstick. Be sure to take a look at your owner’s manual before you proceed. If you are checking your oil manually, here is how to check the oil level in your car:

  1. Park your car on level ground and wait until the engine is cooled down.
  2. Pop the hood of your vehicle and locate the dipstick.
  3. Pull out the dipstick and wipe the oil.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick back into its tube.
  5. Pull out the dipstick again to see how much oil is there by looking at the level.

If the top of your oil streak is between two marks or within a crosshatched area, the oil level is right. But, if the oil is not in those areas, you need to add more oil. Every vehicle does not use the same oil. Be sure only to add the oil grade that your owner’s manual recommends. When you are ready to add oil, only add a little at a time. Keep adding oil until it has reached the correct level.

Why Check The Oil Level in Your Car?

Unfortunately, oil in a vehicle is often overlooked. Yet, it is vital to the inner workings of your car and its performance. For the most part, an oil change is necessary twice a year. Of course, you may need to have your oil changed more depending on the vehicle and how it is driven. It is good practice to check your oil at least once a month or make it a habit when you get gas.

Either way, you need to know the oil level in your car. When you see the oil level, you can feel confident. You know that your vehicle’s inner workings can handle a road trip. Not to mention, you can find a small issue before it becomes a bigger problem. With that said, if you want an expert to check your oil, you can count on our service department.
