Honoring the rich racing history of Georgia, the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame is a place that every NASCAR fan should visit. With exhibits featuring memorabilia, trophies, and a wide variety of race cars, the museum holds many special events throughout the year. Before you go, learn more about the Georgia Hall of Fame here from the racing fans at Lou Sobh Honda.

Georgia Racing Hall of Fame History

Originally a tourist attraction called Thunder Road, the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame first opened its doors in 2002. Their mission has been to honor and commemorate individuals who “by their exploits, accomplishments, contributions, and activities in regard to Georgia’s racing history, and who by their character and respectability will serve as an inspiration and an example of highest traditions.” Recognized by the Georgia Legislature, and fittingly enough located in Dawsonville, the birthplace of stock racing, the museum not only celebrates Georgia racing, but NASCAR in general.

What to See at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame

The museum exhibits explore the history of Georgia racing, from the prohibition moonshine runners to modern day NASCAR drivers. There are so many race cars and memorabilia on display at the museum, and the exhibits are always changing. You’ll be able to check out race cars like one of Dale Earnhardt’s No. 3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolets, Ronnie Sanders red and white No. 18 Camaro, Bruce Brantley’s red and gold No. 27 Camaro, and more.

The real highlight is the Elliot Family Room, honoring the legendary Bill Elliott and his sons Chase Elliott and Casey Elliot, as well as his nephew Ernie Elliott. Bill Elliott is the only Georgian to win stock car racing’s highest-level championship, and his trophy sits alongside the 1988 Coors/Melling Ford Thunderbird he drove to victory.

The Hall of Fame includes such legends as Red Byron, Lloyd Seay, Bob Flock, T.C. Hunt, Aubrey “Po Boy” Holley, Leon Archer, and many more.

Hours, Admission, and Events

Located at 415 GA-53 in Dawsonville, the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $6.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors, $2.00 for children 7 to 13, and kids 6 and under are free.
